Rome and the Vatican (Option 1)

Rome and the Vatican
| Tivoli Gardens | Etruscan Ruins and Lake Bracciano

We will meet you right down the ship and on the way to Rome there will be time to get to know your driving guide and let him understand your needs and interests.

The first stop of the day will be the Colosseum, where you will have time to explore after being explained about this world-known archeological site.

After the Colosseum, we will see Constantine's Arch, emperor Constantine has changed for ever our religious orientation.
Nearby there are remains of a Roman acquaduct once used to lead water to the Palatine hill, we will talk about the engineering of 2000 year-old roman water lines, it will just amaze you.

Just around the corner from there, you will get an overview of the emperial palace also known as Caesars’ Palace and Palatine hill, the place where Romolus founded the Eternal City in the 8th century B.C. – the valley that you will see from there, where people still go for jogging, or to stroll their dogs, is the famous Circus Maximus where a quarter of a million ancient Romans would gamble on chariott races.

We will then move forward towards another of the seven hills, the Aventine hill, where other than a gorgeous residential area we will see the "key-hole".  From this unusual spot you can see three different countries...

From there we will get to the cattle market area of ancient Rome, where you can still admire the temple of Portunus, protector of the nearby river port and the temple of Hercules the Winner. Not far from these spectacular temples, we will drive by the theatre of Marcellus, and go on top of Capitol Hill, where city hall is now located, from there the view of the Roman Forums valley is probably the most spectacular picture you can take of Rome's heart.

Piazza Venezia where Mussolini did his speeches from the famous window isn’t too far, and once there you can’t miss the huge King's memorial, also known as "Wedding Cake".

Then we will head towards the neighborhood that once was called Campus Martius, in honor of god Mars, and we will suddenly discover the gorgeous Piazza Navona, a very enjoyable square, built on top of a Roman stadium!!

Driving through this narrow labyrinth of old streets, we will get to see Bernini's ironic elephant, which the Romans call "the chicky", and just around the corner the Pantheon - here you can get the real feel of walking in a perfectly preserved and grand Roman temple. The area also includes a view of the stunning Column of Marcus Aurelius and the Italian Parliament.

Once in Rome you cannot miss the world-known Trevi Fountain - if you'd like to come visit again, you have just to throw a coin in, and wait... It always works!

At this time you will probably want to have a little break for a nice local lunch, and the move on to the Vatican...

There you will meet your guide, who will show you, with the passion we are proud of, the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. A full immersion in the fanciness of Renaissance time, and hearth of Christianity ..

After the Vatican we will head back to the ship, where you will arrive in the evening, ahead of time before departure.

Please note that the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays!
